The DIAN Tax Identification Number is composed of 2 functional sections:
| Position | Field | Length | Meaning & Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 9 | Base Number | 8 to 10 digits | Sequential business or personal registration index | 123456789 |
| Final (after hyphen) | Check Digit (DV) | 1 digit | DIAN Modulo 11 checksum calculated with prime weights | 0 |
NIT Check Digit Algorithm (DIAN Modulo 11)
The Colombian tax authority applies prime weights from right to left:
Weights: [3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 67, 71]
- 1. Extract base identification digits.
- 2. From right to left, multiply each digit by corresponding prime weight (last by 3, penultimate by 7, etc.).
- 3. Compute sum of all products.
- 4. Remainder = Sum % 11.
- 5. If Remainder is 0 or 1, Check Digit = Remainder.
- 6. If Remainder > 1, Check Digit = 11 - Remainder.
