About the Colombia NUIP
The NUIP is the unique personal identification number assigned to Colombian citizens by the Registraduría Nacional del Estado Civil for life.
This tool generates and validates 10-digit NUIP codes applying the official weighted Modulo 11 check digit algorithm over the base sequence.
Anatomy & Structure of Colombian NUIP (10 Digits)
The Unique Personal Identification Number consists of 2 sections:
| Position | Field | Length | Meaning & Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 9 | Prefix and Serial | 9 digits | Starts with "1" in modern series post-2003 followed by 8 sequential digits | 102345678 |
| 10 | Check Digit | 1 digit | Modulo 10 weighted checksum with factors from 9 down to 1 | 9 |
NUIP Validation Algorithm (Weighted Modulo 10)
The RNEC formula weights the first 9 digits using factors from 9 down to 1:
DV = (10 - (sum(d_i * (9 - i)) % 10)) % 10
- 1. Confirm total length is exactly 10 digits.
- 2. Verify leading digit is "1" (post-2003 modern series).
- 3. Multiply first 9 digits by weights: [9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1].
- 4. Sum all products.
- 5. Check digit = (10 - (Sum % 10)) % 10.
- 6. Valid if check digit matches the 10th digit.
