Validation Algorithm (GS1 Modulo 10)
The NZBN follows the international GS1 specification for barcodes and global asset identifiers:
Weighted sum of the first 12 digits using alternating weights [1, 3, 1, 3...]. Check digit = (10 - (sum % 10)) % 10.
- 1. Multiply each digit at odd positions (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11) by weight 1.
- 2. Multiply each digit at even positions (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) by weight 3.
- 3. Sum all resulting weighted values.
- 4. The check digit is the amount required to round the sum up to the nearest multiple of 10.
