How does SSN validation work?
The SSN validator analyzes the length of the document (9 digits), the optional mask format (AAA-GG-SSSS), and validates the official numbering restrictions of the Social Security Administration.
A valid SSN cannot have the first section (Area Number) equal to '000', '666', or in the '900'-'999' range. The middle section (Group Number) cannot be '00', and the final section (Serial Number) cannot be '0000'. If any of these rules are broken, the document is considered invalid.
Anatomy & Structure of SSN (9 Digits: AAA-GG-SSSS)
The US Social Security Number consists of 3 distinct hyphen-separated components:

SSN Validation Rules & SSA Restrictions
SSN verification checks regulatory structural limits and determines geographical or randomized status:
Area != 000 && Area != 666 && Area < 900 && Group != 00 && Serial != 0000
- 1. Confirm total length is exactly 9 digits.
- 2. Area Number: must not be 000, 666, or between 900-999 (reserved for ITINs).
- 3. Group Number: must not be 00.
- 4. Serial Number: must not be 0000.
- 5. Reject standard SSA advertising and test numbers.
- 6. For pre-June 2011 issuances, decode the geographic state and estimated age based on group sequencing.
