About Argentina CVU (Clave Virtual Uniforme)

The CVU (Clave Virtual Uniforme) is the official 22-digit payment account identifier created by the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA — Communication 'A' 6520) for accounts provided by Payment Service Providers (PSPs).

Used by major digital wallets such as Mercado Pago, Ualá, Naranja X, and Personal Pay, CVU enables seamless interoperability with traditional bank accounts (CBU), real-time electronic transfers (DEBIN), interoperable QR code payments (Transferencias 3.0), and COELSA clearing.

Argentina CVU Anatomy & Structure (22 Digits)

The 22-digit Argentine CVU consists of 2 independent validation blocks:

PositionFieldLengthMeaning & RuleExample
1 to 3Virtual Prefix3 digitsFixed '000' prefix allocated by BCRA to indicate non-bank virtual accounts000
4 to 7PSP Code4 digitsUnique identifier of the BCRA-registered Payment Service Provider0003
8Block 1 Check Digit (D1)1 digitWeighted Modulo 10 check digit over the 7 initial digits using weights [7, 1, 3]9
9 to 21Account Number13 digitsUnique digital wallet / subaccount identifier assigned to the user0123456789012
22Block 2 Check Digit (D2)1 digitWeighted Modulo 10 check digit over the 13 account digits using weights [7, 1, 3]0

CVU Integrity Algorithm (BCRA Weighted Modulo 10)

BCRA specifies the calculation of 2 check digits via Modulo 10 with cyclical weights [7, 1, 3]:

DV = (10 - (Σ (d[i] × [7, 1, 3][i % 3])) % 10) % 10
  1. 1. Block 1 (PSP): multiply the first 7 digits by the cyclical weights [7, 1, 3, 7, 1, 3, 7].
  2. 2. Compute the sum of products and remainder modulo 10: DV1 = (10 - (Sum % 10)) % 10.
  3. 3. The calculated result must match the 8th digit of the CVU.
  4. 4. Block 2 (Account): multiply the 13 account digits by the cyclical weights [7, 1, 3, 7, 1, 3, 7, 1, 3, 7, 1, 3, 7].
  5. 5. Compute DV2 in the same way: DV2 = (10 - (Sum % 10)) % 10.
  6. 6. The CVU is fully valid if both check digits match and the prefix is '000'.
