About the License Plate Generator (Mercosur)
The Mercosur Plate Generator creates vehicle IDs in the AAA9A99 format (3 letters, 1 number, 1 letter, 2 numbers), the newly adopted standard in Brazil.
Essential for testing modern form validations, dealership systems, and mobility apps that require adaptation to new character formats.
Anatomy of Brazilian Mercosur License Plate
The Mercosur plate pattern follows 7 alphanumeric characters in LLLNLNN layout:
| Position | Field | Length | Meaning & Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Letter Prefix | 3 letters | Three letters preserved from origin state allocation | BRA |
| 4 | First Digit | 1 digit | First numeric digit from original number | 1 |
| 5 | Mercosur Middle Letter | 1 letter | Replaces second classic digit: 0=A, 1=B, 2=C, ..., 9=J | C |
| 6 & 7 | Final Digits | 2 digits | Last two decimal digits | 34 |
Plate Conversion Rule to Mercosur Standard
Converting classic plates to Mercosur transforms the 5th character (second numeric digit) into a letter:
0=A, 1=B, 2=C, 3=D, 4=E, 5=F, 6=G, 7=H, 8=I, 9=J
- 1. Retain the initial 3 letters.
- 2. Retain the first digit at position 4.
- 3. At position 5, convert the second digit to its equivalent letter (e.g. 2 becomes C).
- 4. Retain the last 2 digits at positions 6 and 7.
- 5. Result strictly matches regex ^[A-Z]{3}[0-9][A-Z][0-9]{2}$.
