About Panama RUC Check Digit (DV)
The Dígito Verificador (DV) is a mandatory 2-digit control code established by Panama's Dirección General de Ingresos (DGI) to ensure the integrity of RUC tax identification numbers.
For both natural persons and corporate entities, the DV is calculated through a double-pass rotating Modulo 11 algorithm with weights cycling from 2 to 9.

DV Calculation Algorithm (DGI Panama)
Official mathematical formula issued by DGI:
Sum = ∑(dᵢ × wᵢ) mod 11, weights cycling 2 through 9 right to left
- 1. Base Normalization: Strips non-alphanumeric characters, keeping digits and province identifiers.
- 2. First Digit (DV1): Computes weighted sum using weights 2..9 right-to-left. Modulo 11 is applied. If remainder is 0 or 1, DV1 is 0; otherwise, DV1 = 11 - remainder.
- 3. Second Digit (DV2): Appends DV1 to the base and repeats the Modulo 11 calculation. If remainder is 0 or 1, DV2 is 0; otherwise, DV2 = 11 - remainder.
- 4. Combined Output: DV1 and DV2 together form the official 2-digit verification code.
